Sport Conditioning Coach at Mount Royal University Cougars Athletics and Recreation

About the Role

Reporting to the Manager of Varsity Athletics within the department of Cougars Athletics and Recreation, the Sport Conditioning Coach works as a member of the Integrated Support Team of sport science and medicine professionals with the goal of ensuring Cougar athletes are healthy, fit and able to compete for their respective varsity teams. This professional service provider will strategically plan, organize, implement and deliver a variety of physiological training programs in consultation with each Varsity coach. This position will also be required to lead and mentor a group of assistant conditioning coaches (full time, part time, students) who will assist in the delivery of the programs.


Direct Service

  • Meet regularly with each Cougars varsity athletic program staff (coaches and other IST members) and guide program planning

  • Support the delivery of sport conditioning services for Varsity student-athletes and, in doing so, engage other MRU Departments (HPED, Continuing Education)
  • Deliver all components of the sport conditioning plan to each Cougars varsity athletic program in conjunction with other Integrated Support Team staff members
  • Develop and utilize monitoring tools
  • Where appropriate, provide leadership and program delivery for the Alberta Sport Development Centre – Calgary programs and services

Resource Management

  • Recruit and on-board new staff

  • Build job descriptions and expectations of all staff in the area of sport conditioning

  • Manage the hours of all staff and ensure the needs of the Payroll department are taken care of each pay period

  • Provide leadership, mentoring and regular feedback for all Sport Conditioning staff
  • Conduct annual reviews for all Sport Conditioning staff
  • Initiate disciplinary action/termination for staff according to the Alberta Labour Law and MRU Human Resource Policy in consultation with the Manager of Varsity Athletics
  • Assist in the development and monitoring of the sport conditioning budget and collaborate with the Manager of Varsity Athletics for approval

Planning and Scheduling

  • Coordinate and book all required training facilities

  • Manage all Sport Conditioning staff’s schedules and training times with all Cougar Varsity programs
  • Assist Cougars Sport Conditioning staff with schedules, training times and development of sport specific annual training plans
  • Schedule and chair all meetings of Cougars Sport Conditioning staff members
  • Co-manage regular meetings and consultation with the Integrated Support Team members
  • Collaborate with the Facilities Team and the ASDC Calgary Region to maximize space utilization and capitalize on business opportunities for external parties (ie. club sports programs, NSO/PSO groups, kids camps)

Equipment and Facilities

  • Identify the need for equipment repair, upgrade and renewal in conjunction with Facilities Team
  • Ensure all staff and student-athletes are properly trained in the correct use of all equipment in the facility and are aware of all emergency action plans
  • Pursue grant and funding proposals to advance the purchase of equipment
  • Utilize the Exercise Science lab in collaboration with the Department of Health & Physical Education



  • Passion and energy for contributing to a university community and, in particular, varsity athletics
  • Bachelor Degree in Kinesiology, Physical Education, Human Kinetics or related field
  • Demonstrated knowledge of theories and practices in promoting student development and learning
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible relevant experience which includes at least three (3) years of supervisory experience of full time staff
  • Certified Exercise Physiologist (CSEP – CEP)
  • Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS)
  • Member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA)
  • Experience working with elite level programs (NSO/PSO, collegiate, professional) in a variety of sports is required
  • Experience with fitness testing, monitoring and the numerous tools related to this is required
  • Experience working in a team environment
  • Demonstration of liability coverage through professional affiliations and/or personal arrangements
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and work as a member of the team
  • Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to and appreciation of diversity, cultural competence and global perspectives


  • Masters Degree in Kinesiology, Physical Education, Human Kinetics or related field
  • NCCP Certification
  • Valid First Aid/CPR Certificate
  • Experience as a Head Strength & Conditioning Coach in a university athletic department
  • Experience working with web based applications focused on athlete monitoring 
  • Former high performance athlete/student-athlete
