Hillhurst Sunnyside Community Association is a vibrant, inclusive community centre offering community-based programming, childcare, sports and recreation facilities, and private hall rentals for business functions and special events.

The Communications Coordinator is responsible for leading all of HSCA’s external communications including stakeholder engagement, reporting, marketing and social media. HSCA is seeking someone to deliver on a communication strategy through collaborative process with the full team, providing leadership and support while building accountability for communications deadlines and brand representation. The Communications Coordinator is responsible for multiple established deliverables each month but is also expected to demonstrate creativity and leadership in developing new ways of telling our story to existing and new audiences.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Design and Content Development

  • Lead design and content development for print materials, electronic advertising, monthly newsletters (print and online), website, blog, annual report and other platforms/materials, as needed

  • Deliver content for social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook and Instagram)

  • Maximize HSCA’s online and community presence, including identifying and leveraging new opportunities for marketing HSCA and its programs, services and events

  • Offer promotional assistance to programs staff and to renters, where possible

  • Support program staff in delivering program specific email newsletters

  • Stakeholder Relations

  • Assist with management of membership communications database (Mailchimp and Ivrnet)

  • Develop and foster new and existing partnerships with local area businesses to grow community memberships

  • Event planning (Annual General Meeting, Volunteer Appreciation)

  • Coordinate public relations activities

  • Leverage existing and cultivate new media relationships

  • Manage media inquiries

  • Seek out and evaluate opportunities for partnerships, sponsorships and advertising on an ongoing basis

  • Support organizational donor stewardship

  • Support organizational knowledge collection, storytelling and evaluation

  • Marketing and Promotion

  • Leverage HSCA web, print and community networks to promote internal programs, services and activities

  • Develop and implement a marketing strategy for: hall and gym rentals, flea market, outdoor seasonal pool and other programs/activities, as needed

  • Assess analytics of all marketing and promotion platforms and strategize based on results

  • Manage budget for external marketing costs

  • Administrative and Program Support

  • Support the team at HSCA in cross-departmental work

  • Support fund development activities including funder relations, reporting and stewardship

  • Support internal communications processes

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing or related field

  • Minimum two years experience in communications or marketing

  • Excellent communication skills both orally and in writing

  • Exceptional editing skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with a team

  • Demonstrated experience with social media including blogs, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritise and plan work effectively within the constraints of set deadlines

  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative

  • Event planning experience, an asset

  • Experience working in a community-based setting, an asset
