General Manager at Garrison Curling Club


Established in 1997, the Garrison Curling Club is one of the most dynamic and vibrant curling clubs in Canada with over 1,000 active members across all ages and 6 sheets of world-class curling ice. 

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to deliver on the Club’s mission: 

“To create a great curling experience both on and off the ice” 

Position Description 

The position of General Manager reports directly to the Board of Directors of the Club. The Club Manager plans, promotes, coordinates and manages all aspects of Club operations, as well as such other duties as may be requested by the Board of Directors from time to time. Further, the General Manager has ultimate responsibility and managerial authority with respect to all of the Club's employees. 

This is a salaried position and the salary will be determined by the skills and knowledge of the successful candidate. While responsibilities cover the full year, flexible hours are required based on the seasonal nature of the Club. More hours are required from September to April (including weekends and evenings) and reduced hours May through August. 

This position has a flexible start date between April and August, 2019. 

Specific Responsibilities 

  1. Managerial

    • develop, manage and maintain a well-qualified team of employees; and

    • provide leadership and training to all employees; and

    • fill in for sick/unavailable employees as needed.

  2. Financial

    • working closely with Treasurer and Office Bookkeeper to ensure accurate accounting records;

    • monitoring long term capital planning and debt management through yearly operational budgeting with the Board; and

    • drafting and submitting applications for government grants.

  3. Operational

    • responsible for all operations of the Club and its facilities;

    • working with the head ice maker to make sure that the curling ice is in excellent playing conditions;

    • manage bar/kitchen staff duties - inventory control, ordering supplies, scheduling deliveries, scheduling bar staff hours, and developing relationships and negotiating with suppliers;

    • Manage and organize leagues, ice bookings, bonspiels, lessons and other events at the Club;

    • sales and inventory control of curling equipment through the pro shop;

    • promotion of the Club, its facilities and programs to current and new members through newsletters and social media;

    • webpage updates and maintenance of our Club software; and

    • Attendance at monthly Board meetings, upon request.

Required Competencies 

  • excellent communication skills necessary to manage employees and develop good relations with the members;

  • strong organizational and time management skills;

  • independent self-starter who can lead collaboratively in a team environment;

  • ability to develop creative programs to promote and grow the membership;

  • able to draft and implement marketing strategies, including social media and traditional media;

  • accounting, payroll, and experience in reviewing financial statements;

  • proficient computer skills and ability to learn specific software applications easily; and

  • basic understanding of the sport of curling. 

Preferred Experience/Education 

Preference will be given to candidates who have: 

  • previous experience managing a sports-related facility (such as an arena, curling rink or golf course);

  • business management and leadership experience in customer or member-focused organizations;

  • experience with marketing communications and promotions;

  • track record of establishing effective operating policies, procedures and processes; and/or

  • a university or college degree in business, sports management or equivalent.
