Capoeira is a martial art form that combines music, kicks, aerobics, dance and artistic expression. Capoeira was created around 400 years ago by Brazilian slaves. Using a combination of music, dance and violent kicks, slaves were able to practice combat skills under the disguise of dance. These slaves used capoeira to escape their masters and create a rebellion group called "Quilombos". Despite the sport being outlawed and its creators being marginalized, capoeira remains an important aspect of Brazilian cultural identity and is recognized as the national sport of Brazil.
