Albertans Competing This Week for a Wildcard Spot at Calgary National Bank Challenger

Calgary (AB) – The OSTEN & VICTOR Alberta Tennis Centre, has released the field competing in the Calgary National Bank Challenger Pre-Qualifying event. Calgary’s own Harrison Scott (University of Texas) and Joshua Peck (University of North Carolina) will be amongst the twelve players from across Canada vying for one qualifying wildcard spot in the Calgary National bank Challenger taking place this fall. The pre-qualifying event, taking place at the Alberta Tennis Centre from June 13 – 15th, 2018.
The Calgary National Bank Challenger is a $75,000 US Prize Money event featuring many of the ATP World Tour young stars. The Challenger Circuit has been dubbed “ATP Stars of Tomorrow”, and it is the same circuit where Canadian players Milos Raonic, Denis Shapovalov and Eugenie Bouchard competed on before making their mark on the world tour. The Challenger tournament will run October 13-21st, 2018 at the OSTEN & VICTOR Alberta Tennis Centre.
Calgary National Bank Challenger Tournament Director, Danny Da Costa said, “This pre-qualifying event provides a unique way to bring together some of the top players in the province and country. They will have the chance to compete with some of the best tennis players on the planet, this coming October”.
Both Scott & Peck train at the Alberta Tennis Centre in Calgary when they are home. Scott is a former Canadian Junior National Champion and has represented Canada internationally at junior events. Peck was a former member of Tennis Canada’s National Junior Training Program and was also an international level junior player. Both players have held ATP rankings.
The Tournament’s third seed is Jeffery James of Edmonton, who is the #1 player for the University of Alberta Golden Bears Tennis Team. The fourth seed is Cleeve Harper from Calgary, who has spent the past number of years training at the Smith-Stearns Tennis Academy in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Harper will be joining Scott at the University of Texas this fall and recently competed at the Yonex Calgary ITF Junior Event (a world-ranking junior event) where he captured the doubles title and was a singles finalist.
Admission is free and play will commence at 9:00 am on June 13th. Media footage, as well as interviews with the players & organizers, can be arranged.
