All Sport One City Week: Table Tennis
Overloaded with confidence, I headed into Geng Table Tennis Academy, where I was very quickly humbled after playing against owner Horatio Pintea. The table tennis professional made me look foolish! I couldn’t rally let alone return a serve against Horatio, who chuckled as he sent a spinning fast serve right by me. Horatio represented Canada for nearly twenty years including World Championships, Pan Am Games and the Olympics.
A Week of Sport Discovery: Equestrian
SugarTide Equestrian is approximately a year and a half old. The facility is really nice and well taken care of, containing 25 large stalls for the horses, an indoor arena, an outdoor arena, and many other places on the grounds for the horses to run around. SugarTide hosts about 60 riders for lessons.
A Week of Sport Discovery: Horseshoes
My first and only set of horseshoes was purple and plastic, and I can’t remember throwing them at anything other than the wall as a toddler. I had never even played the game of horseshoes camping, but I had always wanted to try it. When I contacted the President of the Calgary Horseshoe Club, I was excited to continue my blog series with a post about horseshoes.
A Week of Sport Discovery: Luge
All of the Olympic sliding sports (bobsled, luge and skeleton) have always intrigued me, especially luge. The idea of racing down a track at 110 km/hr is crazy, but sounds like my kind of crazy. I am a bit of an adrenaline junkie, so I jumped at the chance to try the indoor luge track at WinSport.
A Week of Sport Discovery: Foot Golf
I hadn’t heard of foot golf until a week before I tried it. The River Spirit Golf Club emailed Sport Calgary, telling us about foot golf and I thought, I’m not good at golf or soccer, wouldn’t it be fun to combine the two? I booked a tee time the next day.
A Week of Sport Discovery: Track Cycling
I was watching the 2016 summer Olympics in Rio De Janeiro when I saw track cycling for the first time. The match sprints were on, and the two competing cyclists went as slow as they could, trying to get higher on the banking of the track to get in front of their opponent and then drop down to end the race in a sprint.
A Week of Sport Discovery: Wheelchair Basketball
The only time I have ever sat in a wheelchair was in a hospital getting wheeled to my car after I fainted during a blood test. Because I had never actually moved my myself around in a chair, I was nervous to be out of my element for wheelchair basketball.
A Week of Sport Discovery: Parkour
Everything I knew about parkour before today I got from clips online of “parkour fails”. I knew it consisted of navigating a cityscape, running, jumping and flipping to get from one place to another – and I knew it looked like it really, really hurt when it was done wrong. So naturally, I couldn’t wait to try it!
A Week of Sport Discovery: Kayaking
I had the opportunity to try river kayaking with Emil from Waterwerks Kayaking on Monday. The last time I was in a kayak was when I was 10 years old and my grandpa took me in the ocean. I remember it being fun – although it was tricky to get in and out – and not much else.
